Put the freeze on disease.

Motor Nurone Disease

Many of you will have heard or seen of the ice bucket challenge sweeping the world. Everyone has jumped on the band wagon and it has definitely been splashing about my corner of the world in Leopold Victoria, Australia. Why? Because recently a local mum was diagnosed with the Motor Nurone Disease.

MND is a progressive, terminal neurological disease.

She has two young kids and is well known around the place. I'm lucky enough to live in close knit community that bands together when it needs to. We all know each other from school, local sport, swimming lessons and kindergarten duty.

People with MND progressively lose the use of their limbs and ability to speak, swallow and breathe, whilst their mind and senses usually remain intact

So when this mum, Cassie, was diagnosed earlier this year, a terrific team of girls got together to put on a charity lunch. Hoping to raise money for this family to perhaps go on a holiday and make some wonderful memories.

Average life expectancy from diagnosis is 27 months. There is no known cure nor effective treatment.

Chicks with Charity are a not for profit group http://www.chicksforcharity.com.au/ With their guiding hand a staggering $38,000 was raised for the family.

As a result the ice bucket challenge has spread from one household in Leopold to another. Mums, Dad, kids, sibling - everyone has got involved.

People with MND progressively lose the use of their limbs and ability to speak, swallow and breathe, whilst their mind and senses usually remain intact

Since the first Motor Nurone Disease Ice Bucket Challenge in Australia a couple of weeks ago, MND Australia has received $700,000 in donations from 14,000 supporters. That's phenomenal awareness and one bandwagon I'm happy to jump aboard!
