What do you enjoy most about the writing community?
· Interacting on YouTube with publishers, agents, authors, illustrators and readers.· Learning how the publishing industry works.
· Creating books and receiving support and reviews from the writing community.
· Reviewing NEW release books and giving them away.
· Interviewing publishers, authors and illustrators to find out what’s HOT.
What is so worthwhile about networking?
Networking opens doors, builds relationships with publishers, agents, authors and readers. These connections give me limitless opportunities to present speaking events, pantomimes, reader’s theatre and writing workshops with my hubby, Steve Tyrrell.I was shocked how many schools and libraries booked me last year in COVID … and are booking me for writing festivals in 2021.
Have you ever secured a grant for writing?
Yes, I received 7 government grants. In 2020, I received two new grants.
One to set up my ISO Book Show on YouTube
to present online pantomimes to schools including our picture book, Ready Set
Discover Logan.
Arts Queensland gave us a grant to research our children’s eco novel Song Bird Drought Rescue.
We travelled out to Winton and Longreach Queensland visiting key
settings in our book including Age of Dinosaurs, Flying Doctors and QANTAS.
We presented a FUN video on YouTube featuring our adventures, searching
for Destructo and solving the drought problem.
Song Bird,
superhero must save the outback from the drought.
Animals are dying, water’s disappearing,
dinosaurs are stampeding,
… and now Aunt
Matty’s kidnapped.
Is Destructo
behind the devastation?
Song Bird follows
clues to unlock a secret.
Can Song Bird rescue the outback before it’s too late?
Have you ever had a fan moment and met somebody famous? Tell us about it.
YES!! I interviewed prolific author and publisher Sophie Masson from Christmas Press, Little pink Dog Books and United Armidale Press. She shared her HOT tips on what’s happening with children’s books in 2021.
What is the craziest (and best) thing you have ever done?
In March 2020, I kick-started Karen’s ISO Book Show, featuring FUN costumes, props and humour.
This led to publishers contacting me to request *LIVE video interviews for themselves and for authors and illustrators. I now have over #50 NEW videos on Karen’s ISIO book show.
WOW! Thanks Melissa for this awesome interview.
