STOP the Bully is a riveting junior novel to empower girls and boys with assertive strat-egies. The mystery reveals the bullying dilemma from all perspectives.
STOP the Bully raises BIG issues: bullying, family break-ups, poverty, self-esteem, cop-ing with change, friendship, forgiveness and reconciliation.

Today we welcome back the passionate and inspiring Karen Tyrell. Today she is talking about her newly released chapter book STOP the Bully. Don't forget to leave a comment for your chance to win your own copy of this powerful story.

Tell us about how STOP the Bully came to be.
I’m a survivor of childhood bullying and parent-teacher bullying. I’m passionate about mental health and bully prevention.
Mentor and author-friend Anita Bell suggested I write an empowering junior novel using my experiences to help others. I wanted to write a story to catch kid’s imagination and empathy for the victim AND the bully at the same time deliver positive bully prevention strategies.

You have written both fiction and non-fiction. What are the pro's/con's to both?
FICTION

PROS: Fiction is so much fun to write. You can to create any story you can imagine, inventing inspiring characters that succeed over their struggles.

CONS: Your story could be compared to others in a similar theme and genre. You must make sure yours is original, handling the subject matter in a different way.

NON-FICTION
PROS: Writing your real life story is extremely healing and cathartic. You can help others by sharing tips on how to overcome life’s challenges.

CONS: You reveal your very personal life to the world.

How does your writing process work?
A story idea comes from nowhere when I least expect it. I jot it down quickly on paper. For the next few weeks I let the story idea percolate letting my imagination run in many directions. Asking myself: what if? Then what’s BEST?

I write the first draft over weeks or months. I rewrite my story several times adding research and changes suggested by critique groups and beta readers. Finally I send it to a professional editor before publishing.
Where to next for Karen Tyrell?
I have many projects and ideas on the boil. I’m waiting for feedback on two picture books. I plan to breathe new life into my sci-fi junior novel Josh and the It. I’m also working on sequels to my picture book Bailey Beats the Blah and junior novel STOP the Bully.

  3. Good fortune to you Melissa on your writing journey. I was at a seminar this morning on building your writing platform and it emphasised how important having blog guests and being one are to expanding your readership. The issues raised in Karen's book are also vital to be heard and shared so well done on both. Let's Stop the Bully together. :)
