Flash Fiction Friday By Lily Benitez

Slapdash By Lily Benitez

The wind was vicious, like a playground bully who wanted to push me off the swings. I could feel the cold currents whip around my body; the wind wanted to blow me right off the edge of this cliff.

I was going off this cliff, there was no doubt about it. However, it would be better if I had my wings out first. I was certainly a daring one for standing at the very edge of Cross Cliff. I've always been a daring one, not to mention I had a reputation to keep up with.

Everyone knew me as Dash. I was more than just another soldier with wings... unbeknownst to the others, I was actually a girl posing as a man. Girls do not have wings in our species, only the males do. I guess I just happen to be special, huh?
"Yo, Dash!" a voice exclaimed.

I turned my head and saw my best friend Ember approach me. She didn't have wings, therefore she kept her distance from the edge. "Sup?" I asked her, my voice casual.

Ember shook her head. "You're not seriously going flying, are you?"
"Why else would I be standing here?"

"The party starts in ten minutes. You hear me? You have no time!"
I laughed. Then I sprouted my wings from my back and watched Ember's eyes widen slightly. My feathery wings were a dull white color, but under moonlight or sunlight they had a silvery gleam.

"Ten minutes is plenty of time," I grinned.

"I swear, if you go and—"
Fwoom.
If Ember finished her sentence, I never heard it. The sound of the rushing wind filled my ear drums. The wind consumed me as I descended off the cliff's edge; it wrapped around my face and neck, through my fingertips, everywhere. Down I went. Farther, farther, and farther.

Now!
My wings gave a powerful flap, and I that's when my direction shifted and I was now flying up instead of falling down. Once my wings got a taste of the fresh air, they only wanted to flap more because they were so happy. I felt my wings sing to me as they continuously flapped and the power that slowly built up in the pit of my stomach.

Yes, this was what I loved. Speed.
I rushed through the air. The wind was now my friend as it helpfully gave me boosts in speed.
I flew back up to the edge of the cliff, where Ember was still standing there and giving me one of those looks. I shrugged and did a simple back-flip in the air. "Want a ride?"

Ember was smiling but she shook her head in contradiction. "Show off," she muttered.

Welcome Lily Benitez ! Thank you for participating in Flash Fiction Friday. This piece makes me want to read more. I hope this work in progress becomes a completed story one day. I'd love to read it because I think Dash might be a very cool character.

Tell us three things about yourself Lily.

1.  I write because... I love unleashing my creativity and creating putting my fantasy on paper!

2.  If I was a character in a book I would be... A Disney Pixie Hollow pixie! Not Tinkerbell, maybe my own made up character? I'd live in Neverland, that's for sure!

3.  My super human power would be... Definitely flying. Preferably the ability to fly without wings. I'd have endless freedom!
